50th anniversary of the First Human Spaceflight and the significance of Ceramic in Space Voyage.

To celebrate the 50^th anniversary of the first human space flight accomplished on April 12, 1961 by soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the Russian Permanent Mission to the United Nations.

Fifty years have passed since that amazing voyage, but the legend of Gagarin’s courage and journey to the ‘final frontier’ continues to be a source of inspiration for space exploration for peoples and nations around the world.

The shuttle is also covered with more than 27000 ceramic tiles that keep the Interior of shuttle cool when the outside encounters temperatures on up to 3000 F.

A far cry from the methods of the ceramic artist, the silica fiber High-Temperature Reusable Surface Insulation Tiles or HRSI tiles are made by a laser beam assisted computer controlled machine tool system.
